Maya, Modeling, and More

Two Workshops - 11 Weeks

Have you ever wondered how those characters, sets, and props in your favorite films or video games are created? We'll be showing you techniques, how to's, and tips so that you can learn to sculpt simple to sophisticated objects for use in your own animation shots; all the while getting grounded with the ins & outs of Maya’s entire production pipeline.

'Maya, Modeling and More’ ensures you will have all the technical Maya skills needed to be successful here at iAnimate. You'll learn how to make your own props, design sets, and remove the mystery of all of those tools and buttons in the polygonal model tool set. We'll review simple and easy to learn methods that will open up even more of your creative potential. This is the perfect 'first' class for students new to iAnimate. It will reinforce your foundation and make sure you're ready for additional classes in our Games, Feature, Lighting, Rigging and Pre-Visuilazion series. So come, grab a soda or a cup of coffee, sit down and let's get to work so you have more of the creative freedom you desire.

Maya & Modeling Workshop 1 - Intro

Maya & Modeling Workshop 1 - Intro

In this 11 Week workshop we will be introducing several project based assignments to take you from Zero to Hero in 11 short weeks. We start a by introducing you to the powerful Autodesk Maya toolset and quickly start modeling props from provided reference materials as well as collecting your own reference images for your own unique projects. We start with Cubic and Hard Surface models focusing on recreating the bevel and round edges these objects have. We will then move on to Cylindrical and Spherical objects and discuss strategies for each. There is a focus on Smoothing these models before render time to make them Photorealistic as well and creating low polly versions for our VR and Real Time simulation applications. using these techniques together we can create very advanced hard surface models. Organic Modeling is next, we look at the human form and the tools for creating these models. Preparing meshes for texturing by using the UV editor is taught throughout all of these lesson and makes surfacing these models with realistic Textures and Bump Mapping possible. An Introduction to Lighting models, Animation with the Graph Editor, Rendering with Maya’s Software and Solid Angle Arnold engine, and Compositing shots ensures all students will be successful throughout their entire career here at iAnimate.net.

Maya & Modeling Workshop 2 - Advanced

Workshop Two builds on what we learned in the first workshop and gives students the opportunity to build some amazing Props to use in their Animation and Video Game projects. Need a Chainsaw, Assault Rifle, Musical Instrument, or Vehicle for your project? No problem. Want that prop to function and have animated features pre-built in? You got it! Students will capture their own reference material and create amazing set props that are convincing and rigged, ready for use in your animation or game. We will also be creating 2 Set pieces that will be perfect for your Real Time and pre-rendered Feature Film uses. Set Design Project #1 will be an Indoor Set location of your choosing. Set Design Project #2 will be an outdoor location. Both will make use of hard and soft surfaced objects with animated elements such as wind blowing through trees and curtains, water flowing over rocks and clouds moving across the sky to create convincing environments. Finally we will light these amazing Sets with Daytime and Nighttime Lighting Models. Baking lighting into textures will ensure our game engine will look just as amazing as our scene looks when rendered with the Arnold Render Engine within Maya.

"iAnimate was such a life-changing experience for me. After years of working in the industry but never quite reaching my full potential or career goals, I noticed that my skills had started to stagnate. I had been interested in online schools for years but the timing had never been just right."

  • Anna White

"Six workshops and less than two years later, right at the end of my last iAnimate workshop, I was offered a job as an animator on my first feature film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (at Sony Imageworks). I can't say enough great things about Jason Ryan and the entire iAnimate community, and I owe so much of my success to all of them."

  • Ed Herft

"I'm really grateful to the team at iAnimate. Without their great tuition and hard work, I'm sure I would not be working in feature film now. They really helped me improve every aspect of my animation."

  • Colin Brown

I've had multiple interviews where they ask "What game is that from?" when viewing pieces I did in classes 1 and 2. iAnimate has been a huge influence on my demoreel and my job positions recently
